Earthquake: Magnitude 3.1 tremor “felt lightly” near Almonte and Arnprior, Ont.

A minor earthquake was reported in the Ottawa Valley on Tuesday.

Seismology Canada says a 3.1-magnitude earthquake was recorded at 10:12 am 11 km north of Almonte.

The earthquake agency said he “felt lightly” in both Arnprior and Almonte.

Earthquakes are not rare in the region, but any major damage rarely occurs.

Earthquakes Canada lists the 5.2 magnitude earthquake on May 17, 2013, and the 5.0 magnitude earthquake on June 23, 2010 as two of the most recent large earthquakes in the region.

Natural Resources Canada recently installed seismic sensors in the metropolitan area that are part of the Earthquake Early Warning Network, which is designed to send notification via electronic devices before strong shaking from an earthquake begins. Other seismic early warning system sensors have been installed in locations including Cumberland, Statesville, Mississippi Mills, Kenmore and Carsonby. One was installed in Kingston.

The earthquake warning system network is scheduled to be operational in 2024.
