The area has witnessed several earthquakes since early Monday morning.

Elgin, South Carolina – On another day, more earthquakes occurred in the South Carolina town of Elgin, and the sixth and seventh in the area since early Monday morning.

The US Geological Survey confirmed a 2.8-magnitude earthquake at 3:09 p.m. Tuesday. It was centered 3.1 miles east and southeast of the town of Elgin and trembled 3.8 miles underground.

Shortly thereafter, a 2.3 earthquake was confirmed at 1:24 p.m., also about three miles east-southeast of Elgin. This was 2.4 miles below the surface.

News19 has already received reports of people who felt the earthquakes, including reporter Walker Lawson, who was in that area. Just last night, a 2.9-magnitude earthquake in roughly the same area.

The latest wave of earthquakes began at 1:32 a.m. on Monday, when the quake hit 3.3. The earthquake was felt in several counties, which woke some people from their sleep. This earthquake has been linked to the largest earthquake in South Carolina since Valentine’s Day 2014.

Two minor tremors occurred hours later. Then early on Monday evening, another occurred.

The Tuesday afternoon earthquakes are the 29 and 30 earthquakes that have been recorded near the Elgin District since late December, and the 26 and 27 earthquakes since January 1.

Today, the USGS is reporting a #6 earthquake this week near Elgin. This magnitude 2.8 occurred about 3 miles east of Elgin, South Carolina, at 3:09 p.m. (5-10-22).

Although many earthquakes occurred in that time period, experts say this is something that can occur naturally. Scott White, a professor of geology at the University of South Carolina, says they continue to research earthquakes to try to understand why this is happening and whether it will persist.

“We don’t look at this whole sequence as an aftershock event, but rather as a whole series of small earthquakes that gradually loosen pressure within the Earth’s crust,” White said. “During this period of time, when sufficient pressure is removed, we will see the end of this chain of events. A continuous seismic sequence does not reflect abnormal seismic behavior. This is a little longer than most, but it could last for several months or maybe a year.”
