Yellowstone: Magnitude 4.2 earthquake shook a volcano – 15 eruption reports submitted | world | News

The strength of the earthquake near the massive still active volcano in Wyoming, USA, was 4.2 according to the University of Utah. The shock was recorded at 7.32am GMT today (Wednesday) or 2.32pm GMT. It was specifically felt on the eastern side of Yellowstone National Park.

According to the official report from the University of Utah, the epicenter of the tremor was located 23 miles northeast of the eastern entrance to Yellowstone National Park.

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 14 km (8.7 mi).

Scientists said this was the largest earthquake to occur in Yellowstone National Park since 2017.

On June 15, 2017, a 4.5-magnitude earthquake struck the volcano.

This event was, according to the scientists, “part of a long-lived swarm of small earthquakes in the area between Lake Hepgen and the Norris Geyser Basin, northwest of Yellowstone.”

In less than two hours, 15 reports were submitted by the USGS Earthquake Hazards Program about the event.

Reports described the shaking as “light” to “weak”.

Scientists from the university said that such earthquakes are common in the Yellowstone region.

Since 1973, more than 30 earthquakes of magnitude 4.0 or greater have been recorded in the region.

Since 1962, a total of five earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or greater have occurred within 16 miles of today’s epicenter.

The largest of these events was 4.2 on the Richter scale on March 25, 2008, 20 miles northeast of Fishing Bridge, Wyoming.

Yellowstone is the site of the world’s largest and most diverse group of natural thermal attractions and the first national park.

The area is known for its scenic natural beauty, but it is the massive volcano that mainly attracts the millions of visitors and scientists who visit it.

Simulations of a possible eruption of Yellowstone volcano that occurred last month showed that civilians living nearby could do nothing to prepare for it.

The volcano has experienced only three eruptions in the past three million years, the most recent of which is the next 630,000 years, which was 1,000 times larger than the eruption of Mount St Helens in 1980 – an event that caused more than $1 billion (£741 million) in damage.

During the last eruption, the massive volume of material caused the Earth to collapse, creating a depression now known as the caldera, which is 55 kilometers by 80 kilometers wide.
