A light earthquake struck Yellowstone on Wednesday morning

The ground is always moving in Yellowstone, but the recent earthquake in the park was severe enough to be measured by the USGS.

A handful of tourists probably started their day with a good shake. At 7:32 a.m. Wednesday, the USGS detected a mild earthquake in Yellowstone National Park.

The epicenter was near Sunlight Creek – northeast of Yellowstone Lake and several miles from East Entrance Road – at a depth of 14 kilometers. However, one could feel the quake as Billings, Shell, and Riverton.

Instruments used to monitor geological activity at Yellowstone recorded the earthquake’s magnitude at 4.2 – a mild earthquake. Up to 15,000 earthquakes of this size are recorded each year.

Since the earthquake was so far away in the Yellowstone wilderness, only 33 people reported feeling it. While earthquakes of magnitude 4.0 can be felt easily, they are only enough to hit things.
