The professor at BHU University has been selected for a US fellowship to work on establishing earthquake early warning systems

Dr. Sandeep Arora, Associate Professor at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) has been selected to take the SERB international research trial for the year 2022-23 in the United States. The fellowship is supported by the Science and Engineering Research Council, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. Dr. Arora from the Institute of Science under the Department of Geophysics at BHU aims to work on upgrading earthquake early warning systems in the Indian scenario.

The four-month fellowship with Dr. Yihe Huang of Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of Michigan, US, has been approved to modernize earthquake early warning systems in the Indian scenario, says the university.

Earthquakes cause massive damage to life and property around the world every year. These losses are much higher in developing countries, like India which affects the economic development of these countries. BHU says that in the absence of any reliable earthquake prediction method, greater focus on Earthquake Early Warning Systems (EEWS) has become the need of the hour.

These systems warn an area of ​​approaching devastating waves within a few seconds. This project will lead to the integration of the Indian EEWS with Europe and the USA which will subsequently improve future disaster mitigation policies.

Earlier, BHU PhD student, Rajan Kumar Tiwari was selected to present his research work at the annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), USA, which is one of the oldest and largest professional association for cancer research.

Rajan, who is pursuing his research under Dr. Ajay Kumar from the University’s Department of Zoology, was to present his work titled “Silicometric analysis identifies unique role of ADRB2-USP20 axis in T-cell lymphoma” in this event. The annual meeting was scheduled to take place from April 8 to April 13 in New Orleans. The Dean of the College of Science at BHU University announced on Twitter that the Biotechnology Department of the Government of India will receive a travel grant to Rajan for the event.
