First responder communication has proven to be critical during an earthquake response exercise

FirstNet is used as an important tool during disaster recovery and response training

Earthquakes rarely come with much warning, and in California, the state with the most damaging earthquakes in the country, that threat is always a possibility.

First responders and the larger public safety community need to prepare for any sudden disaster, no matter the size. That’s why more than two dozen local and international public agencies and 700 attendees gathered in Sonoma in late April for a large-scale earthquake response exercise hosted by the California National Guard and the CalOES Fire Rescue Branch.

From large-scale building extractions and emergency medical response simulations to the practice of public agency interoperability, the training allowed the public safety community to work together to understand their roles in a hypothetical scenario — and FirstNet®, built with AT&T, the U.S. public safety network, was there every step of the way. .

“The purpose of this training was to simulate conditions that would require agencies at the local, regional, state and federal levels, NGOs and other members of the public safety community,” said Phil White, lead exercise planner, Sentinel Response 2022. “Communication is a key component of creating unity across these diverse groups. By providing participants with devices that support FirstNet, agencies were able to experience the importance of seamless communications.”

“Coverage is always one of our biggest problems during disasters. California is very large and can be rural and mountainous. Having that reliable connection can be a game changer,” said President Brian Marshall, Calus State Fire & Rescue Branch. With FirstNet, we are able to Use today’s technology to stay connected with our firefighters. No matter where we are, the time of day, whatever the accident, we have connections, which is absolutely essential for our team.”

By supporting public safety agencies during emergencies and planned events, FirstNet keeps first responders connected to the site and can keep these lines of communication open as the incident evolves. In the response exercise, FirstNet was on site to ensure the technology runs smoothly and to provide deployable assets such as High Power User Equipment (HPUE) that can significantly enhance the power of cellular transmissions, and ROG the Dog, our trained dog therapy program that can be ordered for first responders. During natural and man-made disasters.

The FirstNet Authority also attended the event to collaborate with local, state, and federal agencies. FirstNet understands public safety communications requirements, provides education on how FirstNet supports operations, and oversees improvements to the network to meet evolving public safety needs.

“This exercise was an excellent opportunity to work with our public safety partners, especially our federal partners, in the San Francisco Bay Area to review their operations, monitor training and talk about FirstNet’s capabilities together,” said Chris Baker, FirstNet’s Senior Public Safety Adviser. “We want to help agencies integrate broadband into their drills and exercises.”

“With FirstNet in the training exercise, we were able to educate ourselves about the full capabilities of the network,” said Sgt. Matthew Walker, California National Guard, 49th Military Police Brigade. “FirstNet’s ability to maintain continuity of communication between all supporting entities during the training exercise allowed us to remain in contact with teams across functions. By being able to exercise that communication, we are better prepared for our disaster response.”

During disasters, such as those practiced in training, inter-agency interoperability is critical to keeping victims and first responders safer. FirstNet provides a level of connectivity that allows these agencies to stay in touch when they are on the front lines.

“Having FirstNet support in the mass casualty exercise was significant and appreciated,” said Simon Su, founder and CEO of Aerial Intelligence Group. “Reliable communications in public safety operations are always important, but a reliable network with multi-agency interoperability is critical in large-scale disasters with local, state, and federal responders.”

Our FirstNet Response Operations program is designed to help these various agencies stay connected during disasters. By directing the deployment of FirstNet assets based on public safety needs, the program collaborates with agencies during drills and drills to ensure we are prepared before disaster strikes.

Helping public safety agencies to complete their mission will always be our top priority. As America’s public safety net, we are proud to work alongside first responders to help ensure that communities receive the help they need.
