Dubrovnik historical buildings are constantly measured for earthquakes in a new project

As part of the scientific research project “Seismic Hazard Assessment of Cultural Heritage Buildings in Croatia – SeisRICHerCRO”, funded by the Croatian Science Foundation, a seismograph for continuous measurement of ambient vibrations and potential earthquakes was installed in the Dubrovnik City Hall building.

The purpose of the measurement is to continuously monitor the dynamic properties of the City Hall building in order to identify potential changes in the fundamental frequencies that could be affected by earthquake or vibration caused by human activity and thus assess potential risks. Measurements will be made until the end of the project, which ends in January 2025.

This project focuses on distinctive buildings and collections of cultural heritage sites in areas of potential earthquake risk, where risk assessment becomes a strategic tool when it is necessary to prioritize in the event of restoration.

The Old City of Dubrovnik was selected for this research, which includes, in addition to the city administration building, churches and monasteries, Rector’s Palace, Sponza Palace, all Dubrovnik Museums, St. Jakov’s Cathedral in Šibenik and Trakošan Castle. The goal is to develop simple, applicable methodologies and practical procedures for seismic risk assessment of cultural heritage sites in order, based on the assessed risks, to enhance infrastructure resilience and thus reduce potential risks of damage and economic and human loss.

The project is led by the Department of Geophysics, Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb, the head of the project is Assoc. Dr. sc. Snjeana Markušić, project partners doc. Dr. sc. Davor Stanko and doctoral student Yakov Stanislav Oglišić.
