Transgender women should compete in the “open category” to “protect women’s sport,” two of today’s elite female runners told the BBC. British athletes, one of whom is an Olympian, believe that athletes should only compete in their biological sex category. While governing bodies are struggling to find a way forward, trans athletes have been criticized for competing at high levels in the sport, even though they have met the competition standards set by the discipline.
