Wellington was hit by a 4.7 magnitude earthquake this morning.

Initial recording by Geonet put the earthquake at 4.2 and at a depth of 28 km, 25 km west of Paraparaumu on the Kapiti coast at 8.13 am.

“Morning tremor for some today due to the M4.7 earthquake off the Paraparaumu coast. It was felt by people in the Lower North Island and the North South Island,” she said in a tweet.

Geonet has received more than 12,000 “hair” reports about the earthquake.

A police spokeswoman said there were no reports at this point of any damage related to the quake.
