Three earthquakes have been reported off the southeast coast of Rhode Island

Providence – Three earthquakes struck off the southeast coast of Rhode Island over the weekend, including one that could be felt in northwest Providence.

The first earthquake of magnitude 2.2 was reported at 4:42 a.m. Saturday, about 18 miles southeast of Narragansett Pier in the Atlantic Ocean. At 10:15 p.m., there was an aftershock 2.5 in the same area, according to the US Geological Survey, followed by a 2.2 aftershock near New Shoreham at 2:40 a.m. Sunday. The second quake had a weak third-rate, but was felt in northwest Providence, the USGS reports.

There were a total of 20 responses and no damages reported.

The first two earthquakes occurred 3.2 miles underground, while the last one occurred at a depth of 1.3 miles.

Earthquakes are not uncommon along the fault line that runs along the Narragansett Quay. There were 34 earthquakes reported from 1766 to 2016, according to the Northeastern States Emergency Consortium, a nonprofit all-hazard emergency management group based in Wakefield, Massachusetts.

NESEC says the strongest earthquake in the region occurred in 1638 and was felt throughout the New England colonies. Roger Williams reported the earthquake and wrote that the ground shaking was slight. Report a conversation with local Native Americans who said that earlier earthquakes occurred in the 1500s.

The USGS website said earthquakes in New England occur on faults within the rock, usually at a depth of miles. Most of the bedrock of New England and Long Island was assembled when the continents collided to form a supercontinent 500 million to 300 million years ago, uplifting the northern Appalachian Mountains.

Rhode Island never reported a devastating earthquake.
