The Nelson Civic House is an earthquake-prone building

A recent assessment found that the roof of part of the council building is vulnerable to earthquakes.

Nelson City Council issued two earthquake-prone buildings notices for his Civic home after the assessment revealed two hazards — roof tiles and, more than that, the roof of the tower block.

The discovery was made thanks to the council’s ongoing work to assess the building for potential renovation requirements.

It was found to be preparing for the tower’s roof less than 20% of the New Building Standard (NBS), and the council said in a statement that no employees will be working on the top floor of Civic House from Friday last week onwards.

This is a move that “goes beyond and beyond legislative obligations to keep staff and visitors as safe as possible,” said Acting Chief Executive Officer Alec Louverdis.

The Council has 12 and a half years to address the ceiling issue.

The other issue, the heavy suspended ceiling tiles, was already known to the council and steps were being taken to address it. The tiles were secured in the past year, but there are still some areas that were found in the latest assessment to fall below the NBS benchmark of 34%.

The council said short-term measures will be taken to reduce the risk of tiles falling while long-term plans are being developed as part of the building’s renovation. The tiles must be cured within 25 years.

Short-term actions will be taken to reduce risks from the roof structure and roof tiles while plans are made for a long-term solution as part of the building renovation work.

Louvredis said the new notices placed at entrances to alert the public did not mean the building was now unsafe to enter.
