Recovering from the Cybersecurity Earthquake: Lessons Organizations Should Learn

It’s been over a year since the SolarWinds supply chain hack sent shock waves through thousands of organizations around the world, but this cybersecurity earthquake is by no means over. Recently, we’ve seen fallouts fed by Log4Shell and Spring4Shell vulnerabilities, which have affected organizations using the Log4j library and Spring Core framework.

We’ve seen attacks on the supply chain before, but 2021 was the year they really took off. As was the case in the Spring4Shell and Log4j attacks, the use of open source solutions increased the risk. They are ubiquitous in almost every form of software development and often get developed quickly, leaving gaps in security. This means that if there are any vulnerabilities inside open source components, the impact will be enormous.

In the wake of Log4Shell and Spring4Shell, there are three main lessons that organizations should learn in order to stay safe while using open source software:

DISCOVER RISK

To develop, manage and maintain a secure software supply chain, you must understand and have visibility of all the links.

To ensure security, companies need a clear inventory and a true understanding of all the open source components used. You cannot afford to blindly trust the source and security of software components. If incidents like Log4Shell, Spring4Shell, and SolarWinds have taught us anything, we need to have more awareness of all the different pieces of software used within an organization.

This includes how and where they were developed, as well as where they are used across the company, so that if vulnerabilities are discovered, the problem can be quickly addressed to limit damage.

Don’t overcomplicate

Second on the list is the need to make yourself shockproof. When developing frameworks or libraries, it is important to do it well. But it’s also important to take a simpler approach so you don’t inadvertently introduce vulnerabilities.

It’s better to focus on doing a few things well than delivering a lot of features poorly. The more features, the more likely there is a serious vulnerability. So, when looking at what new features you’d like to add to products and services, think carefully about whether you need them and only turn on the features you know are essential.

Despite the need for rapid development, companies need to make sure they take the time to really think about exactly what features they need and why – because anything that is beyond requirements can leave the door open to vulnerabilities.

remove the drudgery

Third, organizations must be aware of the intervening concerns when designing and developing different applications. Whether it’s logging, metrics, encrypted connections, or caching, it’s important to consider whether these persistent concerns need to be addressed in-app or if they can be taken out instead.

Let’s take an example. With logging, many frameworks can send logs to a variety of locations including output files called stdout and alert services, for which your application is responsible. But there is a better and safer way that you can take. Alternatively, consider having your application send logs to stdout and then make use of a log collection service, to send logs to all required end sites. By dismissing these concerns, there is less code and configuration that developers have to worry about, and therefore fewer vulnerabilities they can infiltrate.

heels

Log4Shell and Spring4Shell only worked to emphasize the need for organizations to take proactive steps to protect their environments. However, this will become more difficult as innovation accelerates, creating more and more machine identities for companies to monitor.

Trying to monitor and manage all these machine identities, while also keeping an inventory of all software components and making sure development is simple, wouldn’t be an easy task. Organizations today lack the skills and resources to ensure that they can check all these boxes. Instead, they must use automation and security tools to ensure that these vulnerabilities are minimized, so that shock waves from attacks like the one that hit Log4j are not widely felt.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
