The main building of Hutt Hospital was hit by the earthquake

Hutt Hospital is looking at how to get patients and services out of the main building after it was declared earthquake-stricken.

A seismic assessment found that the hospital’s Hiritonga block would be prone to earthquakes by law.

“The work required to repair the building will disrupt patient care. Instead, we will look at how to move patients and services out of the building as well as study alternative arrangements that might work in our communities,” Vyonagh Dogan, CEO of DHB and Capital & Coast DHB, said on Tuesday.

Duggan said the DHBs will work with the Department of Health, as well as the New Zealand Transitional Health Department and the Maori Health Authority.

“We will also consult and engage with employees and service providers and will recommend the Hutt Valley Board of Interim Agencies to prioritize any alternative in a way that ensures that the Hutt Valley community continues to have access to quality, safe and equitable health care,” she said.

Meanwhile, Doğan said he will continue to provide services from the Heretaunga Block as the risks to people are considered low.

Campbell Barry, the mayor of Lower Hutt, said he is concerned by the news that the block has seismic problems.

“I want to be absolutely clear: Today we have learned that the main building at Hutt Hospital will be closed, and there are absolutely no plans to rebuild or repair the site to secure future health services.

“Once the family, specialist services, and staff leave Hutt elsewhere, I am deeply concerned that they may never return. Today may represent the long-term removal of Hutt Valley’s specialist health services.”

Barry is calling on the New Zealand government and health to commit to completely rebuilding the site.

In a statement, he said he would be “relentless in pursuing” these authorities and “struggling with all his might” to ensure the hospital’s future is secured.

The Heretaunga Block has 210 physical bed spaces – said to be 79% of Hutt Hospital beds.

The main building is said to make up 25% of the total hospital bed capacity in the area.
