Jakarta (May 17): A 6.0-magnitude earthquake hit western Indonesia’s Bengkulu province early Tuesday morning, but a tsunami is not expected, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said.

The quake struck at 01:58 am local time (1858 GMT on Monday), with its epicenter 51 km southwest of Engano Island and shallow under the seabed for 10 km.

The agency said there were no initial reports of damage or injuries.

The quake was felt in North Bengkulu district, but it did not cause panic among the residents. “So far, there have been no reports of homes or buildings destroyed, injured or killed,” Christian Hermancia, head of the emergency unit of the regional disaster management and mitigation agency, told Xinhua by phone.

The official said staff of the local disaster management and mitigation agency would continue to assess the risks. – program
