Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts experienced 30 earthquakes in 12 months

It’s not something we think about here in New Hampshire or Maine or Massachusetts because earthquakes and New England are not synonymous. I mean this is a California thing, you know? But get this:

Maine has had 10 between mid-April and mid-May, followed by New Hampshire with 10 since mid-January, and Massachusetts has felt or felt 10 since May 2021. As of the date of this article.

The reason I decided to look at earthquakes in this area is because Massachusetts had three small earthquakes that struck off the coast of Rhode Island and were strong enough to be felt. Those three hit on May 14 and May 15 with a magnitude between 2.2 and 2.5 depending on the earthquake’s path.

That’s ten earthquakes last year in Massachusetts according to Earthquake Track.

Here are the readings for the granite state that has experienced ten earthquakes in the past four months. Who knows? You probably know that earthquakes happen more often than we know, but they are just simple enough that we have no idea that local seismic activity is happening under our feet.

Personally this was a learning moment for me to learn that earthquakes are not rare, they are just minor earthquakes in New England.

And now to Maine we go with this activity as well. As I mentioned above, Maine has experienced 10 earthquakes in the past month.
