DOST-PHIVOLCS Opens New Seismic Station in Iloilo – Philippines

Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS), in partnership with the Municipality of Dueñas and Central Sugar Mill of San Antonio, Inc. (CASA), Dueñas Iloilo Seismic Station (DUIP) opened on April 28, 2022. DUIP is located in the CASA Sugarcane Plantation, Brgy. Bunung small in angel.

With the establishment of DUIP, the institute is fulfilling its commitment to establish 115 seismic monitoring stations in the country by the end of President Rodrigo Duterte’s administration. “The additional station allows for faster and more accurate release of seismic information to decision makers, emergency responders and the general public,” said DOST Undersecretary and Administrator in Charge of PHIVOLCS Dr. Renato U Solidum Jr. during the inauguration. “To complement the additional tools we’ve installed here, we aim to share the necessary knowledge with you to implement an appropriate earthquake response,” he added. The Mayor of Dueñas Mamerto Bellobero III also realized that the seismic station would allow the municipality of Dueñas to play a more active role in disaster preparedness.

Equipped with earthquake monitoring and satellite data transmission systems, the solar-powered DUIP is capable of transmitting seismic records to the Data Receiving Center (DRC) of DOST-PHIVOLCS in Quezon City in real time.
