The siege of Mariupol has come to an end, as hundreds of Ukrainian defenders have finally abandoned their steelworks, which had been held for months, under relentless bombing. More than 260 Ukrainian soldiers, some of them seriously injured, have left the remains of the Azovstal steelworks and handed it over to Russian forces. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the Ukrainian military, intelligence and negotiating team, as well as the Red Cross and the United Nations were involved in the evacuation operation. It is unclear what will happen to Ukrainian troops now. He hopes Ukraine will be released in exchange for Russian prisoners. While Russia called the operation a surrender, the Ukrainians said Mariupol’s defenders had successfully fulfilled their role in linking Russian forces.
