Bruno named distinguished member of ASCE – UB Now: news and opinions for UB faculty and staff

Michel Bruno, a recognized world leader in the field of civil engineering, is one of 10 experts honored as a Distinguished Member in 2022 by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), a status reserved for the most prominent civil engineers in ASCE.

Bruno, SUNY Distinguished Professor in the Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering, College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, has been honored for his contributions to advancing the latest technologies in structural engineering, ductile design of steel structures, multi-hazard engineering, and seismic resilience through innovative research that has helped shape codes and standards the design.

According to the ASCE, “An outstanding member is a person who has achieved renown in some branch of engineering or in the arts and sciences related thereto, including the fields of engineering and construction education.”

“Michelle is one of the most influential structural engineers of the past three decades,” says Joseph Atkinson, professor and chair of the Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering. “This honor is well deserved, and we are proud to have someone whose career has been so critical to the safety of communities in our department.”

Bruno’s work enhances the resilience of structures against extreme events. His work spans across multiple concentrations and decades, and his research on steel plate shear walls, flexible bridge diaphragms, eccentricly reinforced tubular frames, structural valves, and controlled vibrating piers have made significant impacts on the resilience of structures.

Some of Bruno’s latest research has focused on SpeedCore, a new structural system consisting of shear walls made of composite steel panels filled with concrete. SpeedCore nearly cuts the structure’s construction time for core-wall tall buildings in half, as shown by Seattle’s second tallest building, Rainier Square, completed in 2021.

The American Institute of Structural Steel (AISC) has honored Bruno with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his major contributions to the development of seismic design for steel structures for more than 30 years. Bruno also received an AISC Special Achievement Award for his work at SpeedCore in 2020.

He was inducted as a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering in 2017 and as a fellow of the ASCE Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) in 2019. Each organization has its own criteria for the fellowship, but both recognize Bruno’s accomplishments during his career. The SEI Fellowship distinguishes Bruno as a leader and mentor in the profession, and according to his introductory notice to fellow CAE colleagues, “his work has defined disaster resilience in a way that has since driven research in the field.”

He was named SUNY Distinguished Professor in 2018, the highest faculty rank in the SUNY system, and has been awarded the J. James Croes Medal, George Winter Award, and Raymond C.

Over the course of his career, Bruno has contributed to the development of codes and standards, bridge engineering, structural engineering, and earthquake engineering. He is the author or co-author of more than 550 technical publications and is one of the most cited researchers in the fields of structural engineering and earthquake engineering.

It has conducted reconnaissance visits to many of the affected areas to make observations and field studies for structural damage. He has also served on numerous expert peer review committees, project advisory committees, and special project design teams.

Bruno joined the University at Buffalo faculty in 1998 and served as Deputy Director (1998-2003) and then Director (2003-2008) of the University at Buffalo’s Interdisciplinary Center for Earthquake Engineering Research, now MCEER.

He received his Ph.D. in Structural Engineering, specializing in Earthquake Resistant Design, from the University of California, Berkeley in 1987.

One important advantage is the speed at which information is sent and received. With the help of the internet, the shopping habits of many persons have drastically changed. The car insurance industry hasn't remained untouched by these changes. On the internet, drivers can compare insurance prices and find out which sellers have the best offers. View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
