SunLive – Seismic Science Kits Coming to the East Coast

The National Emergency Management Agency – NEMA – has awarded $28,000 from its resilience fund to East Coast LAB for their collaboration with the House of Science, to create earthquake science kits for elementary and middle schools and kura.

The East Coast LAB-House of Science collaboration is one of nine initiatives that have been awarded funding for 2022-2023.

“NEMA’s CDEM Resilience Fund aims to build local and regional resilience in the face of emergencies,” says National Emergency Management Agency Director Gary Knowles.

“This project will help ākonga and kura to understand and prepare for natural hazards in their area, which in turn will build resilience in their communities and communities.”

This funding will allow East Coast LAB to support the House of Science in developing an earthquake science resource suite, full of hands-on experiences, aligned with the Aotearoa curriculum, and fully bilingual with each component translated into Te Reo Māori and English.

The House of Science’s work remains essential, with the Education Review Office finding in 2021 that only 20 percent of Year 8 in Akonga in New Zealand were achieving the expected level of science curriculum.

In addition to the initial development, this funding will also see these collections distributed across the east coast of Te Ika-a-Māui, from Tairāwhiti to Wellington, as well as the Bay of Plenty.

These East Coast communities lie on the front lines of the Hikurangi Subduction Zone, Aotearoa’s largest and most active rift.

A long or strong earthquake from the Hikurangi subduction zone may trigger a tsunami that reaches the east coast in less than 15 minutes.

This initiative is one of many initiatives led by East Coast LAB and the Trans-Coast Civil Defense and Emergency Management groups, which aim to build the resilience of these communities to this threat.

This resilience fund request has been approved by five Civil Defense Emergency Management Groups, representing Bay of Plenty, Tairāwhiti, Hawkes Bay, Manawatu-Wanganui and Wellington.

The funding is good news for schools and communities, says Clinton Naud of the Civil Defense Emergency Management Group in the Bay of Plenty.

“Educating and informing Tariki — not just about the risks and dangers we all face, but how to keep them and themselves safe — is an essential component of community preparedness and an important part of public safety,” Clinton says.

It makes sense for civil defense groups to come together and support this project because helping children understand and plan for emergencies improves preparedness for the entire community, said Ian MacDonald, director of the Civil Defense Emergency Management Group at Hawke’s Bay.

“Tamariki Resilience is a basic building block for a resilient society,” says Ian. “When the Tamariki are involved in emergency preparedness and risk recognition in our region, they encourage the whole of Wanaau to be more prepared and take a more active role in emergency response and recovery.”
