Australia on tsunami alert after 6.7 magnitude earthquake hits Pacific Ocean

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a tsunami warning Thursday after the Australian island of Macquarie experienced a 6.7-magnitude earthquake. A powerful earthquake was recorded to hit Macquarie Island in the Southern Ocean at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.21 miles). The strength of the initial 7.3-magnitude earthquake was later revised to 6.7.

The official Bureau of Meteorology has stated that “there is a potential threat to Macquarie Island,” an Australian territory located equidistant from Tasmania and the Anderson Peninsula in Antarctica.

According to the International Tsunami Information Center, the warning was issued in light of dangerous coastal flooding accompanied by strong currents that may last for several hours after its initial arrival. A tsunami alert is issued only at a time when a potentially large-scale tsunami is imminent, expected, or occurring. The newspaper said that “the warnings alert the public to the possibility of serious coastal flooding accompanied by strong currents and may last for several hours after its initial arrival.”

Macquarie Island has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997, and is home to the Australian Antarctic Section Station, which is occupied year-round. It is located 1,600 km southeast of Tasmania. Seismic activity is often recorded on the island located on the boundary between the Australian Plate and the Pacific Plate. The highest recorded earthquake on the island was in 1989 when a magnitude 8.2 earthquake struck the area, and the largest intra-oceanic earthquake of the 20th century was recorded in 2004 when a magnitude 8.1 earthquake shook Macquarie Island. Earlier, in December last year, a 6.6-magnitude earthquake was recorded on the island.
