Magnitude 6.1 earthquake recorded in Batangas marine area – PHIVOLCS – GMA News Online

An earthquake of magnitude 6.1 hit the Batangas marine area Sunday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said.

The quake occurred at 5:50 a.m. with its epicenter 21 km off the coast of Calatagan in Batangas.

Its depth was 132 kilometers and its origin was tectonic.

Intensity III felt in Quezon City.

Intensity IV- Puerto Galera in Oriental Mindoro Intensity III- Calapan City in Oriental Mindoro; Density II – Marikina Town, Malolos Town

PHIVOLCS said that damages and aftershocks may be expected.

However, no tsunami is expected, according to Ismail Naragh, the officer in charge of the earthquake and tsunami monitoring division at PHIVOLCS, in an interview on Super Radyo dzBB.

In response to a question about the cause of the earthquake, Naraj said that the Eurasian Plate was sliding over the Manila Trench.

“The Eurasian plate that collided with the Philippines is sinking under the Manila Trench,” he said.

So far, there have been no reports of human or material losses, according to the information officer of the Civil Defense District 4B office, Georgina Opignon.

Al-Rai added that the OCD office is coordinating with local government units to determine any impact of the earthquake.

Meanwhile, Bulacan Regional Office for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management is checking with LGUs regarding potential damage.
