Undersea cables can detect earthquakes based on a new study by British experts. But how do these communication cables know if there are seismic activities?

Over the past few years, scientists have devised various ways to effectively detect incoming earthquakes.

Since defining the activities of the Earth’s crust is complex, most of their techniques are not that efficient.

Now, some experts in the UK have discovered yet another earthquake detection innovation.

Their new study, “Seabed Environmental Sensors Array using an Optical Interferometry-Based Transoceanic Submarine Cable” illustrates how submarine cables can do this.

According to a recent PC Mag report, co-researchers claim to have found a way to make undersea cables in seafloor sensors that can efficiently detect earthquakes.

They said that optical fiber-based sensing technology allows for submarine communication cables, which could greatly improve Earth observations.

Thanks to this, they can make underwater cables as sensors on the sea floor. However, their innovations have not yet reached 100%.

The UK-based researchers said seafloor sensors can only detect seismic activities affecting the entire length of the cable.

Why are seafloor sensors better

As of this writing, most earthquake detection technologies are designed to work on Earth. This means that they can only cover the surface of the earth above sea level.

Now, experts say the planet contains about 70% water. This means that most of the Earth’s land is submerged in water. Because of this, the current potential of seismic activity detection techniques is limited.

If seafloor sensors become a thing, there is a good chance that earthquakes will be detected faster and more efficiently.

On the other hand, a previous study claimed that e-waste recycling should be intensified worldwide.

Meanwhile, nanorobots with a diameter of 200 nanometers are expected to remove microscopic pollutants in water.
