Labor and liberal parties have big lessons to learn from federal suffrage

A notable feature of the newly drawn Sydney electoral map is the low share of Liberal seats. Assuming the Liberals lose voters in Bennelong (where they trail Labor by 1,600 votes with nearly 80 per cent of the count complete), the party would retain seven of the 26 seats within the Sydney Basin, just two more than the total now in the hands of Independents. This is a much less liberal presence than usual, even after previous defeats in coalition elections.

Liberal losses of Independents and Labor reduced party representation at the federal level in Sydney to a few outer suburban blocs – the Bradfield, Berowa and Mitchell seats in the north, and the Bankers, Cook and Hughes voters in the south, plus Penrith. – The seat of Lindsey, the only stronghold of liberals in the west of the city. (Labour is on track to select the inner urban seats for Reed and Penlong, giving it 14 of the 26 seats in the Sydney Basin — a net gain of one seat after Saturday’s election.)

The success of independents within Liberal and Labor political centers sends a powerful message to both parties with the New South Wales elections just nine months away.

The loss of so many Liberal seats is an obvious headache for Prime Minister Dominique Perrottet. Infighting among NSW liberals, meaning that candidates in several state seats were inaugurated just days before a federal election was called, hampered the party’s performance. Beirut described this initial selection process as a “disaster” and called for comprehensive reform. But bitter divisions within NSW liberals could undermine his chances in a state election in March.

The federal findings also reveal challenges for NSW workers. The ALP party won just 33 per cent of the primary vote in NSW on Saturday (with 72 per cent of the vote counted). This is on par with the result of the 2019 state election, when Labor failed to achieve a majority.

But perhaps the most important lesson to learn from Saturday’s political earthquake is that voters want to be represented by local residents who can relate to community concerns.
