A Scottish visitor attraction damaged by a 3.3-magnitude earthquake to reopen its doors to visitors

A Scottish attraction shaken by last year’s earthquake is set to reopen to visitors after more than six months of repairs.

Ochendren, the last town in Scotland, was affected by the 3.3-magnitude earthquake that struck Argyll in November.

A number of the 18th-century buildings on the site – many of which are built of interlocking stonework – were badly damaged by the geological event and considered unsafe.

However, others in the preserved small farming community will be open for pre-booked guided tours starting June 1 after “specialized emergency repairs” made by a team of volunteers.

Work is expected to continue into the fall to make the area safe.

Director Bob Clark said: “The earthquake has caused severe damage to a number of our buildings, and as a result, we will have to restrict access to guided tours only until the buildings are safe for visitors.

“We attract thousands of visitors every year who are eager to see and experience what life was like back in the Scottish countryside.

“There were once thousands of small independent farming communities, known as townships, scattered all over Scotland but today Oschendren is the only living example left.

“We are proud to be able to help people see and enjoy this special and now unique part of Scottish history and will continue to work hard to preserve it for the future.”

The earthquake was recorded before 02.00 on Tuesday 16 November.

Experts from the British Geological Survey said the earthquake’s epicenter was west of Lochgilphead – near the Auchindrain site.
