Graduate men’s soccer John Wolinick has appointed San Jose Earthquakes head coach

STORY LINKS SAN JOSE, CA – (May 20, 2022) – Fordham men’s soccer alumnus John Wolinick has secured a new professional home, being named head coach of the San Jose Earthquakes in the MLS. Wolyniec will work closely with San Jose General Manager Chris Leitch in setting the overall strategy for the club’s Football Operations division, as well as taking a leadership role in player development, scouting and roster management. “I’m excited to welcome John and his family to San Jose,” said Leech. “John has extensive knowledge of Major League Soccer and understands what it takes to be successful. In 2016, Wolinick led the second New York Red Bulls to a United Soccer League record-breaking best (21-3-6), a nine-point lead over second-placed Louisville City, and later won the CONMEBOL Championship with a 5-1 victory over Swoop Park Rangers. He was named USL Coach of the Year after his team’s impressive cup-winning season. The Staten Island native competed en masse at Fordham from 1995 to 1998, where he remains the team’s all-time leading scorer. He led the nation in goals as a senior, receiving both the All-American, Academic All-American and 10th Atlantic Player of the Year awards in 1998. Wolyniec was selected by New York/New Jersey MetroStars as the seventh overall pick in the MLS College Draft 1999 before finally signing with the A-League Long Island Rough Riders and leading the team in achieving goals as a rookie. Later that year, he signed with MetroStars and scored in his MLS debut, eventually appearing in four MLS games. Wolyniec was selected by the Chicago Fire in 2000. Between 2000 and 2010, Wolyniec made 188 additional MLS games (101 starts) and scored 32 goals and 16 assists for five different clubs, including parts of eight seasons with MetroStars/Red Bulls. His best season came in 2004 where he scored 10 goals for MetroStars, the seventh most in the league. Internationally, Wolinick made two appearances for the US national team, both in 2004. After retiring in 2010, Wolinick joined the Red Bull Academy before being promoted to assistant coach of the first team and coach of the reserve team in 2013. Wolinick participated in an EFCL training course at 2013-14, created in partnership with MLS and the French Football Federation, and later awarded the US Soccer Pro license in 2020.
