Trump said the Supreme Court’s decision on LGTBI very strong – BBC News
The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that companies that fire employees for being gay or transgender violate the country’s civil rights laws.
In a decision 6-3, the Supreme Court said the federal law, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex, must be understood to include sexual orientation and gender identity.
The verdict is a big win for LGTBI workers and their allies.
And although the court has become more conservative.
Lawyers for employers said the authors of the 1964 Civil Rights Act did not want to apply it to cases related to sexual orientation and gender identity. The Trump administration sided with that argument.
However, Judge Neil Gorsuch, who was appointed by President Donald Trump in court, said it is imperative that action be taken against an employee.
“A person who is shot because of being gay or transgender is shot because of characteristics or actions that would not be questioned by members of the opposite sex,” he wrote.
Members of the U.S. LGBT community were listening to the news.
