The Department of Education closed its Wellington main office because the building did not meet earthquake standards.

The ministry said about 1,000 employees work in the building and have been asked to work at home.

She said a recent assessment found Bowen Street offices meet only 25 percent of new building standards.

The ministry said the building had previously been assessed as meeting 90 to 100 percent of the standards after the reinforcement.

This has changed due to new seismic assessment guidelines.

Education Minister Iona Holstead said that while Maturanga’s home was now rated by 25 per cent because of the concrete floors, other aspects of the building continued to rate well.

“Together with the engineers’ report and after health and safety assessment, we decided to work and our staff at the Maturanga house were asked to work from home.”

Despite the change in working arrangements for Mātauranga House staff, business went on as usual, along with Te Mahau (regional) offices across the country, she said.

“We have until the end of Monday, May 30th allowed employees to transition to remote work. We expect our employees to work from home through September as we plan our long-term working arrangements.

“We will keep our staff up-to-date and connected throughout the process as we develop plans for future national office accommodation.”
