GEMA is a delay pedal effect synthesis that emits like an earthquake, by Senyawa x Squaresolid
From Yogyakarta comes an unparalleled strong and wonderful delay effect in Indonesia. It stompbox with earthquake setting. And it’s a special collaboration – between Jogja sound and chaos engineer Andreas Siagian aka Squaresolde, instrument builder and musician Walker Suryadi of Sinyawa.
cooperation
Now, collaborations between artists and sound engineers come and go, but this collaboration is very special. Wukir has a voracious appetite for creating gadgets, reusing things he’ll claim straight from the streets. There isn’t really a line between the way he deals with machine technology, modifications, hacking, and invention. And he inspires these ideas with anyone nearby, which I saw a few years ago when he improvised at the MusicMakers Hacklab here in Berlin. It’s perfect for all of me – a constant flow of ideas about instruments and how to play them, and throw them out.
Enter Andreas, squaresolid, who comes from an engineering background and was a prolific inventor of machines. He has also been a champion in innovation and learning about electronics and noise both in Yogya and across the vast and increasingly interconnected and noiseless Southeast Asia region. And – well, spurred on by some unique ideas from Wukir for a different kind of stompbox, they seem to have made a hell of a device for limited playback.
Senawa are also ubiquitous with their left-handed approach to both sound and culture, with a busy calendar in Berlin – only this week in Berlin, they have multiple appearances. What differs from them is that they inspire other artists in a unique way, as is the case with their decentralized music project. So it’s great to see a device that can be deployed as well.

On its surface, GEMA is a delay pedal, delay time of 55 ms – 600 ms, with notes. So what makes it different:
It’s a very dark sound feedback that you can turn into self-oscillation – and there’s a momentary self-oscillation one mode glitch: With π on, “it will produce a chaotic repetition of the audio input along with the sound of a loud hissing white noise.” Single “earthquake” mode: with off, produces “earthquake roar – like rattling”
And that’s it really – but since each key position has an unusual acoustic character, it’s basically never normal. Even the switch isn’t a real bypass – there’s still a bit of a tail. I misunderstood when I first looked at it, in fact, I was thinking there was some sort of vanilla setting and weird setting. It’s never vanilla.
Also, what makes this invention – according to Kerr’s approach – is also the way it works. Yes, it is very simple in its design. But with this bypass – which is not – bypass, switch and instantaneous self-oscillation, this is really meant to be played as an instrument or even imagined as a synth/sound source.
For those of us who are not Indonesian speakers, the concepts are also included in the posters. “GEMA” stands for Echo, and “GEMPA” means earthquake – the two modes. (Germany’s response to “GEMA” will be different but may also include some devilish rumbling sounds, so I think it’s still appropriate.)
Full Specifications:
High input impedance, low output impedance, aluminum housing material, raw design, no plating finish, laser marking engraving, noise/fault mode, size 115mm x 65mm x 55mm, delay time up to 600ms, central negative transducer 9 Volts, circuits use 9V and 5V regulated power, LED polarity protection in UV, signal indicator
Dials: – OooO: It is a delay tweak. Controls the amount of pedal delay time. The minimum delay time is 55ms and the maximum delay time is 600ms. – ODD: is a request for feedback. Controls the amount of pedal repeat delay. If the dial is at the maximum setting, it will auto-oscillate which is useful in GEMPA mode. – oOO: It is Mix Disk. Controls the volume of the delay sound mixed with the input sound. At the minimum settings, all GEMA sounds are completely off except for the input sound. – On/Off Switch: Changing the off switch from on still produces a tail to pass. This is not a true bypass pedal because Wukir tends to shift with/without delay. Internally, the circuit has stored the input and output for high input impedance and low output impedance. – On: LED indicator is light, the input sound will be GEMA. It’s not exactly a unit gain, as Wukir’s DIY needs a bit of a boost before it can be cured. – OFF: LED indicator is off. Input = stored output.

Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily.
