Tshisekedi expects the African Union summit trip to be canceled due to the North Kivu crisis

President Felix Tshisekedi is expected to cancel his trip to Equatorial Guinea to attend the African Union summit on security as he deals with his security crisis in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

Tshisekedi plans to stay and monitor the development of the situation in North Kivu province, according to local media reports.

Fighting between FARDC and M23 rebels continues in the region, with clashes reported in and around Kibumba following last week’s attack on FARDC and forces from the United Nations Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Fighting was also reported near Gomba, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), the UN agency for humanitarian affairs.

Humanitarian workers say about 26,000 people have been displaced by the fighting, and a small percentage of them have joined another 19,000 who previously fled to Uganda. The rest remained in neighboring communities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Tshisekedi is expected to attend the extraordinary summit of the African Union in Malabo, which began with the Executive Council meeting on Wednesday. The summit focuses on two main themes, at the top of the agenda is security and counter-terrorism. Part of this dialogue includes an escalation of regime change driven by military power in African countries.

African heads of state and other representatives will also address humanitarian crises and assistance.

“These two issues are intertwined in terms of causes as well as consequences,” said Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairperson of the African Union Commission.
