Darwin feels 6.4 earthquakes in East Timor

A 6.4-magnitude earthquake was felt off the coast of East Timor on Friday afternoon, the northern region.

Key points: The earthquake struck at 11:36 a.m. local time and 12:06 p.m. Darwin time, and the Bureau of Meteorology ruled out a tsunami, the impact of which was felt by many people in Darwin.

The earthquake occurred at 12:06 p.m. CST at a depth of 65 kilometers, according to Australian Geosciences.

Trevor Allen, chief seismologist at Geoscience Australia, said earthquakes were common in the area, but that these were relatively small.

“Overall, we would expect to see an earthquake of this magnitude or perhaps even more approximately every year in that area,” he told NT Country Hour.
