Magnitude 6.5 earthquake strikes East Timor near Indonesia

The coast of East Timor, also known as East Timor, experienced a 6.5-magnitude earthquake early May 27, according to Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency.

The agency did not issue a tsunami warning, and there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage so far.

It reported that the epicenter was 85 kilometers (53 miles) south of the Maluku coast, at a depth of 104 kilometers (65 miles).

Meanwhile, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the quake was 6.2 km (30 miles) deep and 49 km (30 mi) deep.

The quake was felt in the Australian city of Darwin, more than 700 kilometers (435 miles) from the epicenter, according to Australian media reports and residents’ social media posts.

The Australian Bureau of Meteorology said the quake did not trigger a tsunami warning for Australia despite its proximity, local news agency Catherine Times reported.

East Timor and neighboring Indonesia lie on both sides of the so-called “Pacific Ring of Fire”, a seismically active region where the various plates on the Earth’s crust meet and cause a large number of earthquakes and volcanoes.

East Timor includes the eastern half of the island of Timor, the western half of which is part of Indonesia. It has a population of about 1.3 million. The nation is the newest country in Southeast Asia, having gained its independence from Indonesia in 1999.
