At 2:26 a.m. Friday Indian Standard Time (IST), a 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck 38 kilometers off the coast of East Timor – a country in Southeast Asia between Indonesia and Australia – according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

The earthquake, which struck at a depth of 49 km, is likely to cause a tsunami that will affect the Indian Ocean region. Accordingly, the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System (IOTWMS) issued a tsunami warning in the region.

The USGS has issued a “Green Alert,” highlighting the low potential for casualties and damage from this event. They state that there is a 30% chance that the earthquake could result in up to 10 deaths.

According to the Guardian, the quake was strong enough to be felt in Darwin, Australia as well. However, the Australian Joint Tsunami Warning Center does not mention any threat to Australia at the moment.

Moderate earthquakes were likely felt in Lospalos in East Timor, while Dili – the capital of the country of about 150,000 people – was hit by a mild one.

The majority of the population in this earthquake zone resides in earthquake-prone structures, although there are also resistant structures. The predominant weak building types are unreinforced brick with concrete floor and precast concrete frame with wall construction.

With a population of 13.2 thousand, East Timor is one of the poorest countries in the world, with nearly 40% of its population living below the poverty line, according to a survey conducted by the United Nations Development Program. Earlier this month, on May 17, a 6.0-magnitude earthquake was observed in western Indonesia’s Bengkulu province, although no tsunami occurred.

The Intergovernmental Coordination Group for the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System (ICG/IOTWMS) was formed in response to the catastrophic tsunami of December 26, 2004, which killed more than 230,000 people around the Indian Ocean region.
