NASA images reveal the eruption of the Charcot volcano, where sharks live near an active underwater volcano

NASA images show that an underwater volcano in the Pacific Ocean has begun to erupt. Live there: Sharks that tolerate extreme temperatures.

Off the coast of the Solomon Islands, about 950 miles northeast of Australia, is Kavachi Volcano, one of the most active underwater volcanoes in the Pacific Ocean. It is located about 15 miles south of Fangono Island in the Pacific Ocean. The depth of the sea floor is about 3,960 feet, and its summit is about 65 feet below sea level.

The Smithsonian’s Global Volcanism Program reported in November that the volcano began erupting in October, and the water color change from the eruption can be seen through satellite data in April and May.

Satellite images taken by NASA’s Operational Earth Imager-2 on Landsat 9 on May 14 confirmed the eruption, with volcanic plumes emerging from underwater on the ocean surface. NASA said the volcano is known for explosive eruptions caused by the interaction of magma and water.

However, what makes this volcano unique are the creatures that call it home. Kavachi volcano has also been called “Sharkcano” because in 2015, when the volcano was in a lull in activity, an expedition to the area found that two species of sharks, including hammerhead sharks, lived near the crater. This came after a 2008 study found that the volcano was constantly spewing volcanic particles and fragments into the water, making the environment acidic and “extremely hot,” with temperatures reaching 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

Other fish are found living around the volcano.

“Assemblies of gelatinous animals, small fish, and sharks were observed within the active crater of the volcano, raising new questions about the ecology of active underwater volcanoes and the harsh environments in which large marine animals could exist,” said an oceanography article published in 2016.

The volcano’s continuous eruption, which has been recorded since 1939, created nearby islands, but NASA says they were eroded and washed away by ocean waves. Large volcanic eruptions were reported in 2007 and 2014, NASA said, when residents of nearby islands saw steam and ash.
