Trautwein throws hope into Oklahoma’s game without a hit and pays tribute to Uvald earthquake victims

On Friday, pitcher OU Hope Trautwein couldn’t get Eliahana Cruz Torres out of her mind. The fourth-grader from Ovaldi, Texas, was looking forward to her final softball game of the season on Tuesday night. She was anxious to get dressed and put on her black eyes. She was nervous to hear if she had made the All-Star Team. Torres was never able to do that. She was one of 19 students and teachers killed in a horrific shooting incident at Robb Primary School on Tuesday. Softball players made up a number of the girls who were killed in the massacre. Troutwin was born and raised in Pflugerville, Texas, which is about three hours from Yuvaldi. She’s in softball groups on Facebook with some of the coaches and parents in town. After promoting the no-hitter, Trautwein commented, “I see myself in these females.”

Hearing Torres’ story was particularly moving, with Trautwin saying, “It just breaks me.” “It reminds me that I’m part of something bigger. If I can play for these girls and shine a light on their families, the state of Texas, Central Texas, and the softball community, that’s what I’ll do.”

In the lead-up to Friday’s game, an Ovaldi coach who had coached two girls reached out to Gasso via social media.

“If there is anything we can do to bring joy or hope or just acknowledge the lives of these young people and make these families feel better, we will do whatever we have to do because this sport has allowed us to do that kind of thing,” he said. “We’ve learned that this sport gives us access to people.”

Jasu and her coaching staff printed a series of banners featuring pictures of shooting victims in softball uniforms, and Ugla players before the game wrote messages and prayers for the victims and their families on the poster border.
