10 Strangest Things Ever Said During the Golden Age

Sometimes, it seems like the ’80s were only 10 years ago. In fact, three decades have passed since then. In that time, professional wrestling and society as a whole have changed significantly. In professional wrestling, the show has changed drastically since the 1980s. This is largely due to advances in technology.

However, in the late ’90s, there were also concerted efforts made to present professional wrestling in a more serious and fact-based way. This philosophical shift phased out some of the outlandish silliness that was so prominent in WWE during the ’80s and early ’90s. However, some strange things said during the golden age are hard to forget.

10 “Do you eat all that soul food?”

Today, society has come a long way in interracial relations than in the 1980s. Racism has never been eradicated, but it is not as socially acceptable as it was in less culturally developed times. When watching some old WWE clips from the ’80s, like Piper’s Pit, fans should keep this in mind.

A particularly eerie and disturbing quote came from the December 1984 edition of Piper’s Pit when Tony Atlas was a guest. At one point, Piper, who was playing the antagonist, asked Atlas how he got his big arms. Next, Piper Atlas asks, “Do you eat all spiritual foods?” Fortunately, today’s product is too sophisticated to go back to this kind of weird racism.

9 “Quick Burger”.

In the same way that society develops its views on race, it has also developed its views on animal cruelty. Today, WWE certainly hasn’t been able to operate in the same way they did in the Golden Age, in terms of the way they used animals. The company has never abused animals or encouraged its artists, either.

However, over the years, we’ve seen some strange animal stories that probably wouldn’t fly today. The earthquake crushed Jake “The Snake” Roberts’ snake, Damien, probably Pete in the arms. In today’s PC community, the company wouldn’t even get to the point where Earthquake introduced some “Quake Burgers.”

Some weird quotes from WWE’s Golden Era were said on purpose and happen to age badly. Others were just mistakes that became unforgettable. French-speaking Andre The Giant suffered a Freudian slip of the tongue in early 1988 that many fans have not forgotten. At the 5/2/1988 Main Event, a record-breaking 33 million wrestling audience watched Andre use deceptive tactics to defeat Hulk Hogan for the WWE Championship.

One of the most memorable moments of the show, however, happened during Andrei’s post-match announcement. Andre was supposed to lose the WWE Championship to Ted DiBiase. Instead, Andre mistook it and referred to the title as the “World Tag Team Championship”. In hindsight, it was a funny slip of the tongue in the middle of a large corner.

7 “Janetti tried to dive through the window to escape! What a cowardly act!”

In the early ’90s, WWE began to transition from its golden age. As a result, younger performers who were previously afterthoughts will start receiving payments. This included young Shawn Michaels. At the time, Michaels was half of the popular Rockers tag team along with Marty Jannetty.

In late 1991, a decision was made to separate The Rockers. It happened in January 1992 in the section “Barbershop” by Brutus Beefcake. Michaels would kick Jannette hard and throw him through the barbershop window. The most memorable line from this passage came from Bobby Heenan who said, “Janetti tried to dive through the window to escape! What a cowardly act!” Michaels would go on to become a huge star and the Heenan streak would become legendary.

6 “What am I so grateful for, for thanks? My polka dots!”

Today, WWE is using Cody Rhodes to try to rewrite its history. They would have preferred not to have a narrative floating around that they tried to humiliate one of pro wrestling’s biggest legends. This is exactly what happened though. Although he was rejected for decades, when WWE had Dusty Rhodes on their roster, they did everything they could to make it a joke.

This included throwing Dusty in a ridiculous ring outfit with yellow polka dots all over. Much to the company’s chagrin, Dusty embraced polka dots and beat them. While preparing for the 1990 Survivor Series, Dusty uttered a strange line in a promo that many fans still remember. “What am I grateful for, for Thanksgiving? My polka dots!”

5 “How much money did they spend on plastic surgery, man!?”

In early 1984, Hulk Hogan defeated The Iron Sheik to capture the WWE Championship and never looked back. From that point on, the ’80s was all about Hulkamania in WWE. In February 1988, “Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase and Andre the Giant conspired to finally win the WWE Championship from Hogan.

In the story, DiBiase was paying for a crooked referee to have plastic surgery and looks just like Dave Hebner. The angle looks silly today but in 1988, it was groundbreaking. The most unusual part of the entire angle came easily during Hogan’s post-match promo. During the promo, a stunned Hogan asked, “How much money did they spend on plastic surgery, man!? That line was silly, but it helped make the angle even more powerful.”

4 “He may have temporarily dislocated the kneecap.”

Part of what makes Vince McMahon a genius is the ability to look forward. This is why despite Hulk Hogan having a great golden goose during the ’80s, McMahon was always on the lookout for his next superstar. In 1990, McMahon convinced himself that The Ultimate Warrior would be the one to take the torch from Hogan.

At WrestleMania 6, Hogan and Warrior competed in a classic match for the WWE Championship. The strange quote from that match was given by Gorilla Monsoon. At one point in the match, Hogan began selling a knee injury. When he miraculously recovered, Monson prompted, “I think he may have temporarily dislocated the patella.” Monson sometimes tried to seem too smart.

3 “African Roots”.

Back in the golden age of professional wrestling, society was very deaf about racial issues. This extended to pro wrestling and WWE. In September 1988, WWE greenlit one of their most offensive characters ever when they transformed The One Man Gang into Akeem “The African Dream”.

Many critics have speculated that the character was a fatal blow to “American Dream” Dusty Rhodes, who many of his critics claimed had “acted in black”. Regardless, Akim’s personality was a cultural appropriation before anyone knew what that was. Perhaps the most bizarre part of the whole ordeal was Akeem’s manager, Slick, who said One Man Gang was simply “going back to his African roots”.

2 “Crash, Hulk Hogan!”

In the late ’80s, The Ultimate Warrior debuted in WWE and instantly caught fire with the audience. By all accounts, Warrior was a horrific agent and human, but he had an animal appeal that fans gravitate toward. This made Vince McMahon decide to go with the Warrior as successor to Hulk Hogan at the top of the WWE Tag Team.

While building a WrestleMania 6 match, Warrior interrupted a strange promotion for Hogan. While ranting, the warrior began figuratively speaking about a plane. In the end, the unsteady warrior released some strange instructions saying, “Crash, Hulk Hogan!” It was a little weird, but it fit the crazy warrior personality of the tee.

1 “This egg is ready to be inflated!”

There are basic terms in professional wrestling that often mean something else. For example, a few years ago, when WWE loyalists referred to “bad indie wrestlers” they usually meant The Young Bucks. Along the same lines, when some fans say WWE in the Golden Age was too silly, weird, or cartoonish, they’re probably referring to The Gobbledy Gooker.

The terrible idea appeared in Survivor Series 1990. That night, everyone sat waiting for a giant egg to hatch. When that finally happened, Jane Aukerlund yelled “This egg is ready to be blown!” And boy, do you ever blow. Gobbledy Gooker would break out of that egg and fall into disrepair as one of the worst ideas in WWE history.
