Pakistan survived in 1947 when we had no resources, and we embarked on a path of growth despite the Indo-Pakistani wars of 1965 and 1971. The devastation caused by the floods and earthquake of 2005 did not affect our soul because the nation was united.

This time we are much better off than in 1947, no external aggression or natural disaster has affected us, but we are only in despair because the nation is deeply divided. In previous events, no one doubted the loyalty of half the electorate or the majority of the elected representatives.

Nations have been built from ruins with sincerity and brotherhood. Germany was devastated by World War I, but it regained strength by the time World War II began.

Germany and Japan were utterly decimated after World War II, but they have emerged in less than two decades as powers to be reckoned with. Again, the only factor was the unity of those nations and their determination to prove their worth.

The Pakistani nation does not lack the resources to move forward. It simply lacks the leadership needed to harness its potential. Every party active in politics has tasted power at one time or another.

When these parties were in power, they had a mandate to take action to bring about tremendous improvement in the economy and social indicators. However, none of these governments faced the cartels, the manipulators or the speculators who played havoc in the economy.

Instead, politicians, whether in power or in opposition, get funding from smugglers, builders, stock lords and cartels to pursue their conflicting agendas. The end result is that the common man is left at the mercy of these fund providers, who continue to exploit them.

In all of this, the economic charter remains a dream. Having an economic pact means restrictions on getting service from smugglers, cartels and the mafia.

To keep everyone away from this aspect, political parties remain busy hurting each other. Each of these parties holds its opponent responsible for the economic and social malice that plagues the common man. Through these tactics, both parties ensure that the status quo is maintained, and stakeholders continue to operate without hindrance.

But to do that, there must also be a will. Pakistan is a country with huge resources. Our problems will not be solved in a short time unless politicians form an alliance to eliminate all kinds of corruption and catch tax evaders.

Signing an economic pact to achieve this should be a top priority for all political parties. They must put aside rivalry and quarrels to come on the same page for the economic and social welfare of the nation. Because without it, sustainable development cannot be achieved.

If such a task is accomplished, our tax revenue will double, and many of our problems will be solved. With double tax returns, the country will not need to go to any foreign or domestic lender. We will not be subjected to the harsh terms often placed by rescue package donor agencies.

However, to achieve this, politicians must abandon personal interests. They must implement reforms without favoritism and with complete transparency. If services are to be rendered to industries, these services should not be unconditional. All services must be conditional on performance and achievement of established objectives. No unconditional privileges should be granted. When reforms are truly implemented in cooperation with all political parties, there will be winners and losers.

If the reforms pay off immediately, the ruling political party will be the first to benefit. Opposition political parties will benefit from reforms, if they take time and bring misery and pain to the electorate on immediate terms.

But be that as it may, whether the reforms benefit directly or after a while, the country and the people will benefit.

The need of the hour now is to think above petty personal gain. The economy should not be jeopardized to gain some political points. Politicians should not confuse politics with economics.

Selective prosecution on corruption charges breeds nepotism. All kinds of corruption must be held accountable. Be it those who perpetrate show versus demand corruption, grand versus petty corruption, traditional versus unconventional corruption, public versus private corruption.

Hoarding is also not possible if there are proper checks and balances in the markets. Price gouging, cartels, and other bad practices cannot happen without the complicity of someone in the corridors of power.

Corruption and tax evasion remain major threats to our country’s growth prospects. Tax evasion occurs because someone in the tax office gives away tax evaders in exchange for some rent (the rent is many times less than the benefits that tax evaders receive).

Smuggling again is not possible without the complicity of officials. Reporting of production or lower import bills is caused by corruption. Red tape is another form of corruption. The bar is reduced if appropriate officials are bribed at each stage.

We urgently need all politicians on one page to achieve transparency and fairness in our economic affairs.
