New images reveal that a melted reactor at the Fukushima nuclear power plant rests precariously on eroded struts that could collapse in a powerful earthquake.

The images, taken by a robot, showed the reactor was resting precariously on a fragile frame of corroded struts.

While the interior of Japan’s damaged Dai-ichi reactors was too radioactive for humans to safely enter, a remote-controlled robotic camera sent images from Reactor No. 1.

The reactor was one of three that melted in 2011, when a tsunami triggered by an earthquake destroyed the plant’s cooling systems.

The 9.0-magnitude earthquake on March 11, 2011 was so powerful that it shifted the Earth off its axis and triggered a tsunami that swept across the main island of Honshu and killed more than 18,000 people.

The huge wave rushed over the defenses at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant and flooded the reactors, causing a major disaster.

As a result, there were three nuclear meltdowns, three hydrogen explosions, and the emission of radioactive contamination.

New images, published by The Times, show that the concrete base on which the reactor vessel rested has been largely decomposed by molten reactor fuel, which seeped from the reactor core.

The ship, weighing 440 tons, was now supported by the structural steel hull of the concrete base.

However, this was not thought to be enough to keep it in place if the earth shook violently.

The earthquake that triggered a tsunami of 9.0 on the Richter scale was one of the most powerful on record.

Aftershocks from the earthquake continue, weaker than the original disaster but still serious and a safety hazard for the nuclear plant.

Just months ago, on March 16 this year, four people were killed and 225 injured when a 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Fukushima.

Terrified witnesses said buildings were left shaking after what appeared to be two earthquakes, and the second tremor lasted for about two minutes.

People in Japan are being warned that a similarly powerful earthquake may strike again in the following weeks.

The tremor registered 7.3 and as high as 6 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale in some areas — too strong for people to stand, according to public broadcaster NHK.

While it was not believed to have caused significant damage to the plant, it was impossible to predict when future earthquakes would strike and how devastating they would be.

Speaking about the reactor’s location last week, the head of Japan’s nuclear regulator said: “We remain concerned about whether it will withstand a strong earthquake.”

The decommissioning mission at Fukushima has barely begun, nearly 11 years after the disaster.

The authorities insisted they would dismantle the plant piece by piece and remove the deadly molten fuel inside.

Nothing like this has ever been attempted before, and it seems that every faltering step towards the goal is followed by some kind of setback.

Groundwater has been a problem, as it flows from the hills above the coastal station, where it is irradiated by the destroyed reactors.

This water has been collected by pumps in storage tanks that have been constantly overflowing since the accident.

The Japanese government’s announcement that it will pump more than one million tons of water, cleared of some but not all pollutants, into the Pacific Ocean has sparked angry protests from local fishermen and from Japan’s East Asian neighbors.

Many of those affected claimed that the Fukushima disaster could have been avoided.

Prosecutors claimed that the executives had access to studies that predicted the risk of a nuclear catastrophe from a tsunami.

And in 2012, a special commission concluded that Fukushima was a “profound man-made disaster”.
