Shrewsbury has been hit by a small earthquake – people report their beds shaking and the ground moving underneath.

Many in the Telford area took to Twitter to say they felt the earthquake this afternoon at around 4pm. Wondering if the area was hit by an earthquake as the ground under it shook.

According to the seismic site Volcano Discovery, seismic activity has been recorded.

They said: “We are receiving unverified early reports of ground shaking that may have been caused by seismic activity in or near Telford, England, UK on May 30, 2022 (GMT) at approximately 14:35 GMT.

“There are no details yet on the size or depth of this potential earthquake. If confirmed, we can expect more accurate data to emerge in the next few minutes.”

“The stated location, magnitude, and time are indicative, based on our most appropriate seismic model. They are provisional until AllQuakes monitoring service receives more accurate scientific data from a national or international seismological agency.”

“I heard rattling and felt the desk shake. The fact that others have asked the question makes me think it should have been,” Love Telford said on Twitter.

Another took to social media to say she felt her bed shaking.

Michelle Job said, “It was a real WTF moment, I just sat on my bed and started shaking and then I realized the whole house was shaking. It ended quickly and I was like, ‘Did we just have an earthquake?’

“Jumped on Facebook and it looks like yes. I’m on Wem and I’ve seen people say I felt it in Shrewsbury & Whitchurch too.”

The British Geological Survey wrote on Twitter: “Hi, we are looking into the matter now and will update as soon as possible.”

Elizabeth Wilkinson wrote: “Yes, my son felt the house moving in the TF1 Telford #Earthquake area, feeling weird and nauseous!”
