Locals reported shaking of the ground and homes as the 3.8 Shrewsbury earthquake

An earthquake of magnitude 3.8 struck Shrewsbury.

Many locals around Telford have taken to Twitter to report feeling the ground is shaking underneath.

The Volcano Discovery website, which monitors earthquakes, said seismic activity has been recorded.

They said: “We are receiving unverified early reports of ground shaking that may have been caused by seismic activity in or near Telford, England, UK on May 30, 2022 (GMT) at approximately 14:35 GMT.

“There are no details yet on the size or depth of this potential earthquake. If confirmed, we can expect more accurate data to emerge in the next few minutes.”

“The stated location, magnitude, and time are indicative, based on our most appropriate seismic model. They are provisional until AllQuakes monitoring service receives more accurate scientific data from a national or international seismological agency.”

The Love Telford page posted on Twitter: “I heard a rattling and felt the desk shake.

“The fact that others have asked the question makes me think it should have been.”

Another local took to social media to say she felt her bed shake.

Michelle Job said, “It was a real WTF moment, I just sat on my bed and started shaking and then I realized the whole house was shaking. It ended quickly and I was like, ‘Did we just have an earthquake?’

“Jumped on Facebook and it looks like yes. I’m on Wem and I’ve seen people say I felt it in Shrewsbury & Whitchurch too.”

The British Geological Survey wrote on Twitter that the earthquake struck at 3.36 pm at a depth of 8 km.

She said: “BGS has received numerous reports that this event has been felt by residents in Shropshire and surrounding counties.”

Affected areas include Shrewsbury, Telford, Stafford and Stoke-on-Trent.

Caroline and Paul Blair, from Wichurch about 10 miles away, told the Shropshire Star: ‘We were sitting watching TV and I heard a noise like a door slamming if I left two doors open across the house.

“Then we noticed our TV, which was on a stand, was moving and then the sofa we were both sitting on just shook. It was so weird, it looked like someone was jumping on it.”

One worried person wrote on Twitter: “Small earthquake in UK, anyone else having a small heart attack? Request a friend.”

Another wrote on the site: “Does anyone feel an earthquake? #Shropshire.”
