Shropshire earthquake: West Midlands earthquake of magnitude 3.8

A 3.8-magnitude earthquake has struck the Shropshire area and homes are reported to “shake”.

The British Geological Survey said the quake measured 3.8 at a depth of 8 km east of Wim on Monday.

She added that she had received reports that people in the area felt the earthquake – although the damage is unlikely.

A statement from the organization said: “We can confirm that our sensors detected an earthquake of 3.8 millimeters on the Richter scale at 2.47 pm on 30 May 2022, approximately 16 kilometers northeast of Shrewsbury.

“We have received a number of reports that people in the area have felt it.

“An earthquake of this size can produce strong shaking within about 10 kilometers from the epicenter but the damage is unlikely.

“People may have felt the earthquake at distances of up to 100 km.”

The epicenter was between the villages of Stanton-upon-Haine Heath, Weston-under-Redcastle and Hodnet.

People were reporting effects such as ‘my seat wobbled’, ‘felt the house move from left to right’, ‘noticeable shaking coming from the floor’, ‘noticing strange shivering through my office chair,’ faint but it lasted for about three seconds, and ‘shocked’ all windows”.

This was the third earthquake of more than two magnitude to hit the UK in the past 24 hours.

A Shrewsbury homeowner described his house as “vibrating from side to side”.

“I sat on the sofa and the whole room was moving, and I’ve never felt an earthquake before,” they told Birmingham Live.

“I asked my partner if it was an earthquake and he said it was or an explosion. It felt like the sofa was up.”

Another resident said they were still feeling the effect after about an hour.

“At 50, I just had my first ever earthquake in North Shropshire, around 3.37pm,” they wrote on Twitter.

“It lasted 5-10 seconds. The whole house shook and the dog went crazy…There was no damage as far as I knew. It felt like a huge truck was driving past resounding.”

It comes after a 2.1 magnitude earthquake was recorded in Arran, North Ayrshire, Scotland just before 8am on Monday.

A 2.3-magnitude earthquake struck Salé, Greater Manchester, at 8.40pm on Sunday, according to BGS.

West Mercia Police and the Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said they had not yet been called in for any reports of earthquake-related incidents.

The BGS said an area of ​​the UK has been hit by an earthquake of this size or larger “about every two years”. The organization said the last earthquake with a magnitude of 3.8 was near Grimsby on June 9, 2018.
