In April 1990, Shropshire was hit by one of the largest earthquakes to hit Britain in 100 years.

The epicenter was around Clune and Bishop Castle, officially on the Pontesford-Linley fault line. It measured 5.2 on the Richter scale, compared to Monday’s 3.2 earthquake.

The difference was huge, with structural damage to many homes, uprooted trees and even a gas leak in Shrewsbury town

Without instant news online, there was a sense of real fear as people left their homes and workplaces amid fears of buildings collapsing.

Two streets in Shrewsbury have been closed, one due to a gas leak and the other due to falling tiles and slate.

Firefighters help secure an unsafe chimney

A chimney at historic Shrewsbury railway station, built in 1848, also lost one of its chimneys and her trains were delayed due to the station’s closure.

Dozens of office workers and station workers spilled onto the station’s parking lot at Castle Foregate.

With so many old buildings, police cordoned off much of downtown Shrewsbury amid concerns that vibrations from vehicles could cause buildings to fall from already weak buildings.

In Castlefield, a chimney collapsed on a house and the builder smashed car windows.

There was not one but two earthquakes in Shropshire in 1984, one in July, three months earlier.

The epicenter of the 1984 earthquake was off the Welsh seaside resort of Porthmadog, and as far as Shropshire, while buildings shook, there were few reports of structural damage.
