Tauranga Hospital contains four earthquake-prone buildings

The District Health Board has revealed four earthquake-prone buildings at Tauranga Hospital, including the theater building and the main ward.

An earthquake-prone building is more likely to be damaged after a moderate earthquake, and therefore will be a greater risk to the safety of the public and employees.

Tauranga is a medium-risk area compared to other parts of the country such as Wellington, which is classified as high-risk.

The four buildings at Tauranga Hospital classified as earthquake-prone are the kitchen and construction services site-wide in the basement floor of the building (T20), the support and office services building, the transit hall (T24), the main ward and clinical services complex (T45) and the theater block (T46).

To bring the level of kitchen and building services to the required level, the building must be demolished and the basement walls strengthened. But the long-term plan is to replace the building with the proposed new Clinical Services Building;

Work has already been done on the exterior of the offices, support services building and transit hall building but more work will be required to modernize the interior walls. The building must be vacated before work begins.

To upgrade the master wing, clinical services complex, and theater hall buildings to code level, the core structure, floor and foundations will need to be strengthened, but the Board of Health is already hoping to build a new Clinical Services Building.

Repair work should take place over the next 12 and a half years.

The Heretaunga Ward building at Hutt Hospital was evacuated due to earthquake problems last month and other health boards have been asked about their seismic assessments in the past few days, the Bay of Plenty District Health Board said.

“We have received expert engineering advice that the risks to people while planning for the future of buildings are low.

“The safety of our staff and patients is our priority, as is the maintenance of clinical and acute services in the hospital.”

The council said the earthquake-prone building need not be empty and there are a number of differences between Tauranga and Haut hospitals.

Hutt Hospital is located on the main Wellington fault line in an area with a much higher earthquake risk and a very low seismic rating.

Tauranga Hospital can either upgrade for more than 12 and a half years or build a new medical services suite and evacuate earthquake-prone buildings.

Whakatāne Hospital is not prone to earthquakes.

The Health Board says it is “proactively” monitoring and managing risks associated with Tauranga buildings.

“We are developing a business case for building a new clinical services suite, which can bring the hospital up to the latest standards and address our long-term accommodation pressures.

“The feasibility study will also consider the option of new construction if suitable land becomes available.”
