Skipton and its surroundings seem to have been hit by a small earthquake.

People took to social media in the early hours to share their experiences.

On the Skipton Community Notice Board, a Facebook group, I asked Nikki Alhassan:

‘Has anyone else felt a tremor? Was it a mini earthquake? Around 2.50 am.

Many people were quick to comment:

Edward Burns replied, ‘I heard a loud noise but felt nothing, so I went to check downstairs, and I just came back to my room and my whole house shook.’

Victoria Edison also said on Facebook: “I sent my husband to investigate as I thought something had blown, I just hid under the quilt!”

Sophie Pickles commented: “I was already awake with my baby and then totally freaked out that someone was trying to break in by slamming the front door.”

Another Facebook comment from LG Morgan: “I felt like something hit my house, went down to check that no walls had fallen since the whole place seemed to be bumping hard like something had hit the wall, but it ended abruptly too – was it an earthquake or a sound high? My poor dog just got back from under the bed this second! Been there since this happened.

Greatest Hits Radio has verified with the British Geological Survey that a small earthquake occurred near Skipton.

It happened at 2.50 am this morning (Wednesday, June 1) and measured 2.6 on the Richter scale.

We were told that the earthquake could have been felt 21 kilometers from the epicenter which is recorded as Blair Moore outside of Irby.

No damage was reported to homes or buildings.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located outside the Balearic region
