Four dead, 14 injured in earthquakes in southwest China

At least four people were killed and 14 others injured after two earthquakes hit southwest China on Wednesday, state media reported.

A shallow earthquake of magnitude 6.1 struck a sparsely populated area in Sichuan Province, 100 km west of the provincial capital Chengdu, the Broadcasting Corporation (CCTV) said.

This was followed three minutes later by a second earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale in a nearby county where deaths and injuries occurred, according to CCTV.

Footage obtained by the broadcaster showed dozens of schoolchildren screaming and running away under the tables as their building began to shake before they exited the classroom with their hands above their heads.

Another video posted by state broadcaster CGTN on social media showed the first earthquake triggering a landslide that destroyed cars and left rocks and soil scattered on a road.

Authorities in Yan City have dispatched more than 4,500 people to the quake zone, including emergency rescue workers, firefighters and military police, CCTV reported.

She said the city was “doing everything in its power to rescue those trapped… and to minimize the death toll as much as possible.”

CCTV added that officials are striving “to ensure that there are no casualties as a result of secondary disasters”.

The China Earthquake Networks Center said the first quake, in Lushan County in Yan, struck at a depth of 17 kilometers at around 5 p.m. local time.

The US Geological Survey said the quake had a magnitude of 5.9 and was less deep, at a depth of 10 km.

An earthquake was felt in cities across Sichuan Province, which damaged some communication lines, state media reported.

Provincial authorities said some buildings were damaged, but there were no initial reports of any buildings collapsing.

At a news briefing on Wednesday evening, officials with the county earthquake bureau said the first quake was following a 7.0-magnitude quake in 2013 that killed about 200 people.

Mountainous Sichuan – a popular tourist destination and home to giant pandas in China – is an earthquake-prone area.

A shallow earthquake on the border with neighboring Yunnan Province in January this year injured more than 20 people.

Last September, three people were killed and dozens injured when another shallow earthquake destroyed tens of thousands of homes.

An 8.0-magnitude earthquake in 2008 in Sichuan’s Wenchuan County killed tens of thousands and caused extensive damage.

Among the dead were thousands of children killed when poorly constructed school buildings collapsed, although the government has not released the exact number of those killed because the case took on a political dimension.
