Magnitude 6.1 earthquake kills 4 in southern China, injures 14

Four people were killed and 14 others injured after a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 jolted Yan City, southwest China’s Sichuan Province, Wednesday afternoon.

The earthquake hit Lushan County in Yan in Sichuan at 5:00 p.m. local time, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC). It said the epicenter, at a depth of 17 kilometers, was monitored at 30.4 degrees north latitude and 102.9 degrees east longitude.

The state-run Xinhua News Agency, citing the earthquake relief headquarters in Yan City, said all the victims were reported from Baoxing County.

Another earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale occurred later in Baoxing County, located under the city of Yan.

The city has activated the second highest level of emergency response to the earthquake and is conducting damage assessments.

More than 800 emergency rescue personnel, armed police, fire department, medical sector and public security bureau were immediately dispatched to the quake-hit areas to search and rescue the wounded, repair roads and transport the affected residents.

The Ministry of Emergency Management said that a Level 3 National Emergency Response has been activated to conduct relief operations. It added that a task force has been dispatched to guide and assist local rescue efforts in case of emergency.

It added that local firefighters have reached the epicenter, while earthquake rescue teams in Sichuan and other nearby areas are on standby for relief operations.

Sichuan Province was hit by the most severe 7.9-magnitude earthquake in China in 2008, killing 90,000 people.
