At least four people were killed and 14 others injured after two earthquakes rocked Yan City in southwest China’s Sichuan Province on Wednesday, halting train lines and causing damage to homes.

A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck Lushan County at 5:00 p.m., followed by a 4.5-magnitude tremor three minutes later in the city’s neighboring Baoxing County.

Some Chinese online social media users said strong tremors were felt in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan and Chongqing.

Some homes in Lushan County were partially damaged, the Sichuan Fire Department said, and it was in contact with relevant provinces and towns that were affected.

China Railways has urgently stopped the affected sections of the train tracks.

The Sichuan Provincial Geological Disaster Management Office warned Wednesday evening that seven county-level regions in Sichuan, including five in Ya’an and two in Chengdu, face a relatively high risk of geological disasters in the next 24 hours.

The earthquake in Lushan was following a 7.0-magnitude earthquake in the region in 2013, according to the Sichuan Seismological Administration. The 2013 earthquake killed 196 people and injured more than 11,000.

The epicenter was monitored in Lushan, at a depth of 17 km, at 30.37 degrees north latitude and 102.94 degrees east longitude, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.

Rapid warning and rescue efforts

China’s Institute of Disaster Reduction in Chengdu issued a warning just four seconds after a quick warning in Lushan, urging tens of millions of people in the city and surrounding towns to quickly take cover, China Media Group reported.

The Yan Municipal Government immediately activated the second-level emergency response, the second-highest level of the four-level emergency response system.

The Chinese government has activated the level three earthquake emergency response, and sent a team on-site for rescue and relief operations.

More than 1,400 regional firefighters have been mobilized to the sites. On the other hand, rescue teams in neighboring Guizhou and Yunnan provinces and Chongqing municipality were equipped as reinforcements.

The Sichuan Provincial Finance Department announced Wednesday night that 50 million yuan (4.5 million dollars) has been urgently allocated to the quake-hit Lushan and Baoxing counties for disaster relief.

All known wounded were taken to local hospitals for treatment.
