Four buildings in Tauranga Hospital are considered earthquake prone

The Bay of Plenty District Health Board is the latest organization to experience earthquake problems with four damaged buildings at Tauranga Hospital.

They include the theater building, the kitchen, site-wide construction services, offices, support services, the master suite and the clinical services complex.

Bay of Plenty County Health Board (BOPDHB) chief executive Pete Chandler told the local Democracy magazine they’ve received engineering advice from experts that the risks to people are low.

“In joint with many other DHB offices across the country, BOPDHB also needs to make further seismic improvements at Tauranga Hospital to achieve the latest standards,” he said.

“The safety of our staff and patients is our priority, as is the maintenance of clinical and acute services in the hospital.”

He said any risks associated with earthquake-prone buildings are proactively monitored and managed.

“If a building turns out to be earthquake-prone, that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be occupied,” Chandler said.

The kitchen was one area of ​​Tauranga Hospital where seismic assessments identified a life safety risk – which was the subject of reinforcement work last year to address this issue.

Chandler said DHB will either upgrade over time or build a new clinical services block and evacuate earthquake-prone buildings.

The required repair work on the main wing and theater building was strengthening the substructures, floors and foundations, which required the building to be evacuated.

The organization has 12 years to complete the promotions and enhance the work.

Chandler said a new clinical services block will raise the hospital to the latest standards and address the stress of long-term stays.

“Building a new clinical services suite is a much better option than working out how to pour our wards into off-site accommodations for two to three years of construction.”

He said the National Bank of Dubai is discussing a feasibility study for a new set of clinical services with the Ministry of Health.

“As we said before, the feasibility study will also consider the option of new construction if suitable land becomes available.”

Tauranga is a medium-risk area compared to other parts of the country such as Wellington, which has been classified as a high-risk area.

Other DHB banks with seismic problems include Hutt Hospital, which evacuated the Heretaunga Ward block last month.

Taranaki Primary Hospital, Capital and Coast District Health Board, and West Coast Gray Hospital all have earthquake-prone buildings as well.

The Whakatane Hospital in the Bay of Plenty NBD is not an earthquake-prone building because it was completed in 2015. It was 100 percent code compliant at the time of construction and will continue to score in excess of 80 percent compliance with new standards that took effect in 2017.
