Four people were killed and 14 others injured when a strong 6.1-magnitude earthquake rocked the city of Yan in quake-prone southwest China’s Sichuan Province, PTI news agency reported, citing local officials.

The earthquake rocked Lushan County, Yan City, at 5 p.m. local time, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.

A video on Twitter shows a woman and child inside a clothing store rushing outside as the earthquake begins. Another video shows a road where motorists suddenly have to contend with ground shaking, stopping and running toward the middle of the road to escape debris falling on the side of the road.

The center said that the epicenter of the earthquake was at a depth of 17 km. The quake was followed by a 4.5-magnitude earthquake three minutes later in Baoxing County, Yan City. The state-run People’s Daily reported that four people were killed and 14 wounded. The four who died in the earthquake were injured by falling rocks.

Videos and photos on social media show that the earthquake and aftershocks caused landslides and damaged buildings, including homes erected for those affected by a 7.9-magnitude earthquake in 2008 in the Tibetan plateau province.

School children ran out of their classrooms as residents ran into the streets as the earthquake shook the area, followed by a series of aftershocks.

The agency reported that communications were damaged in parts of the two provinces due to the earthquake, but some optical cables were restored after emergency repairs.

Ya’an has activated the second highest level of emergency response to the earthquake and is conducting damage assessments.

More than 4,500 personnel from emergency rescue departments and other departments have been dispatched to the quake-hit areas.

The provincial earthquake department said the 6.1-magnitude Lushan quake was a follow-up to the 7.0-magnitude quake that killed more than 100 people and injured thousands in 2013.

Sichuan Province experienced the largest 7.9 earthquake in China in 2008, killing 90,000 people.
