Slight shaking was reported Tuesday in Grand Junction

An earthquake occurred Tuesday afternoon in eastern Utah near the Colorado border.

According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake is rated as 3.8.

“The M3.8 earthquake is a minor earthquake. It is enough to feel, depending on the proximity,” said Rebecca Thompson, a communications specialist at the University of Utah Seismological Station.

According to the impact survey, one person felt the earthquake in Moab and about a dozen people reported a mild tremor in the Grand Junction area. No major damage was reported.

While there is still some uncertainty, the USGS stated that the quake had a depth of 6.8 kilometers (4.2 miles) and had a remaining travel time of 0.2 seconds.

Samson said Utah has the potential for more catastrophic earthquakes (M7 and above) due to the Wasatch Fault, but these are extremely rare.
