Morning earthquake in Magna felt all over the valley

Salt Lake City – An early morning earthquake in Magna measuring 2.5 on the Richter scale. According to the University of Utah seismological stations, hundreds of people have reported feeling the quake. The shaking started at 5:02 a.m. Friday morning.

275 people reported feeling the M 2.5 Magna earthquake this morning. Aftershock sequences can last for several years, and while volumes tend to decrease over time, it is not unusual for a significant event to occur.

The university said Friday’s event was in fact a follow-up to the earthquake that struck Magna on March 18, 2020, with a magnitude of 5.7. This earthquake damaged buildings and homes throughout northern Utah.

According to a press release from the University of Utah seismological stations, its systems are recording an average of two aftershocks per week related to the 2020 earthquake.

Most are smaller than 1.5 degrees, however, 41 aftershocks of 3.0 degrees or greater have been recorded. The university recorded more than 2,700 aftershocks from the original earthquake on March 18, 2020.
